Kiwanis Club of Greater South Cobb: History
Kiwanis Club of Greater South Cobb began in 2014 and originally met at the Threadmill Mall. The club later moved to Victory International Center, 5228 Brookwood Drive Mableton, GA 30126, back to the Threadmill Mall and now meets at noon at O’ Charley’s on the second Tuesday of the month and online via Zoom at noon on the fourth Tuesday of the month.
Initially sponsored by the Jonquil and Lost Mountain Kiwanis clubs, Ron Davis, a Jonquil club member recruited city council members as influencers to help form the club, starting with a group of 25. Charter members included Mayor of Pat Vaughn, Marie Cetrulo, Celeste Houston, Ray Tiyamiyu, Powder Springs Council member Cheryl Service, Henry Lust, Coakley Pendergrass, Dr. Betty Cook, Delphine LaGroon, Ron Davis, Bob Poe, Charles Hood, Angelia Pressley and Pastor Akindele.
Ray Tiyamiyu acted as club’s first elected president, Henry Lust, president-elect, Celeste Houston, secretary and Rhonda Jones, treasurer.
The Kiwanis organization was established to be volunteers and is dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. The local body’s mission at the time of charter was to be very interactive, informal and it provided huge opportunity for community involvement, networking with people, businesses and leaders in the community. Most importantly, it is the opportunity to serve our beloved children and the youths in our community effort to set up educational and mentorship programs with schools. Among those are Key club for high school students, Builders Club or middle school and Terrific Kids elementary-age kids.
